The Las Vegas Philharmonic invites you to join them for their Rising Star Concert featuring an evening of romantic music on Saturday, February 12th. As a special Valentine's gift to the community, the Las Vegas Philharmonic is offering open seating, with a ticket price of only $35.

The concert will feature guest conductor, Alexander Prior, recently hailed as one of the "world's greatest living musical prodigies." Having only just turned 18, his achievements have prompted some in the music industry to compare him to the likes of Mendelssohn and Korngold, such is the maturity and depth of his artistic work.

At the age of 12, Prior was commissioned by the Moscow State Ballet to write Mowgli, which was soon premiered at the Kremlin to great international acclaim. Since then, his compositions have premiered in some of the world's greatest concert halls, most recently Horizons (2010) at London's Barbican with the Royal Philharmonic and ‘Gogol' (2009), his latest symphony, with the St Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra and Choir.

In January 2010 Prior was appointed by the Seattle Symphony as Chairman's Fellow, a position created especially for him where he conducted a number of orchestral projects including Mahler's 4th Symphony and Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf.

On February 12th, Prior will conduct the Las Vegas Philharmonic as they perform Vaughan Williams' Norfolk Rhapsody, No. 1 in E Minor, Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major, Op.60, Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, Overture-Fantasy and Nielsen's Helios Overture.

The pre-concert conversation will start promptly at 7:15 pm, led by Alexander Prior. Patrons will have an opportunity to learn more about the music and composers featured in this performance.

Tickets are available by calling the UNLV box office at 702-895-2787. The ticket price is $35 and seating is general admission only.
The Las Vegas Philharmonic will kick off the New Year on January 15th with its third Masterworks Concert of the season featuring the dashing Italian pianist Fabio Bidini. He will make his first appearance in Las Vegas, playing the jazzy and exotic concerto by Khachaturian. The piece is deeply rooted in the folklore of Khachaturian's native Armenia and has won the acclaim of audiences throughout North and South America.

Fabio Bidini started studying piano at the age of five and was one of the youngest graduates of the prestigious "Conservatorio Santa Cecilia" in Rome. He has won numerous top prizes at international piano competitions including the Busoni and Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. His upcoming performance with the Las Vegas Philharmonic is sure to dazzle patrons!

The evening will begin with the Ruy Blas Overture. Felix Mendelssohn was commissioned to compose this overture for Victor Hugo's play Ruy Blas, a socio- political commentary, set in 17th century Spain, twisted with elements of love, revenge, and death. The Philharmonic will end the concert with Symphony No. 4 in E minor by Brahms, a dramatic work reflective of nineteenth century romanticism.

The pre-concert conversation will start promptly at 7:15 pm, led by Maestro David Itkin. Patrons will have an opportunity to learn more about the music and composers featured in this Masterworks performance.

Tickets are available online or by calling the UNLV box office at 702-895-2787. Three price levels for seating are available: $35, $50 and $75 per ticket. The Las Vegas Philharmonic provides a shuttle service from Summerlin's Starbright Theatre and Anthem's Independence Center in the Henderson area for your convenience. Bus passes can be purchased at the box office when buying concert tickets. These are available for $15. The 2010-2011 concert schedule is on the Las Vegas Philharmonic website - lvphil.com.
The Las Vegas Philharmonic conducted its annual Young Artists' Concerto Competition this past November. The four winners of the competition received a cash prize of $1,000 each and the chance to perform on stage with the orchestra during its Youth Concert Series on January 11th, 12th and 13th. The winners of the competition range from 10 - 17 years old and will perform concertos on cello, marimba, piano and violin.

The Youth Concert Series is an opportunity for fourth and fifth grade students in the Las Vegas community to see a live symphonic performance. This year's program is called "Hats Off" and will feature the National Anthem and works from various musical time periods including Mozart's Musical Joke, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries and John Phillip Sousa's Stars and Stripes. Each piece will have a hat or costume to provide a visual representation of the historical period in which the music was composed.

The purpose of the Youth Concert Series is to encourage school age children to learn an instrument and understand that musicians and music lovers of all ages can play and appreciate classical music.

Since its inception in 1999, the Philharmonic's Youth Concert Series has reached well over 140,000 students. The concerts are presented to the students free of charge. The Las Vegas Philharmonic hopes to inspire the next generation of performers and classical music supporters in Southern Nevada.
From Beethoven’s Heroic 5th Symphony to a tribute to Frank Sinatra with Vincent Falcone on the podium, the Las Vegas Philharmonic will perform a rousing series of concerts for its 2011-2012 Season. The year assumes even more importance because it marks the transition from UNLV’s Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall to Reynolds Hall in The Smith Center in March 2012, milestone in the 13-year history of the orchestra.

To launch the season at Ham Hall on September 10th, Music Director and Conductor David Itkin has chosen Beethoven’s heroic 5th Symphony as well as Walton’s Viola Concerto performed by guest artist and National Public Radio music commentator Miles Hoffman. The Philharmonic’s popular Pops series launches on October 22nd. After rave reviews and a sold out show in 2010, Ol’ Blue Eyes is back when Bob Anderson will sing a tribute to Frank Sinatra and the great American songbook. The year will end with a Masterworks performance on November 19th including Glazunov’s Violin Concerto in A minor performed by virtuoso Rachel Barton Pine and the holidays glitter in the annual Pops celebration on December 17th, with Phantom star, Kristen Hertzenberg, Jersey Boys star, Travis Cloer, and the Las Vegas Master Singers providing the musical fireworks.

Continuing its emphasis on encouraging young musicians, on February 18, 2012, the Philharmonic will stage a Rising Star performance with guest pianist, Haochen Zhang, 21, the youngest recipient of the Van Cliburn Gold Medal in 2009. Zhang will perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor.

The Las Vegas Philharmonic will make its grand entrance into The Smith Center on March 24th with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” featuring soprano, Marie Plette, mezzo-soprano, Eugenie Grunewald, and three distinguished choral groups.

The Philharmonic wraps up the Pops season with an evening of George Gershwin’s greatest hits on April 14th and concludes its classical performances on May 12th with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (“New World”) and Respighi’s The Pines of Rome.

Concerts begin at 8 p.m., with a pre-concert conversation with Maestro Itkin at 7:15 p.m. Subscription packages are available by calling The Smith Center Patron Services Center at 702-982-7805.

Copland’s Appalachian Spring, Glazunov’s Violin Concerto in A Minor featuring guest artist Rachel Barton Pine, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 “Rhenish” create a diverse program for The Las Vegas Philharmonic’s second Masterworks concert of the season on Saturday, November 19. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall at UNLV with a pre-concert conversation with Music Director and Conductor David Itkin and violinist Rachel Barton Pine at 7:15 p.m.

Copland collaborated with celebrated choreographer Martha Graham to score a ballet celebrating America’s 18th century pioneers. Although the work was composed before Graham called it “Appalachian Spring,” listeners felt the music ran true to the feel of spring and the splendor of the Appalachians.

Rachel Barton Pine, who will perform the Violin Concerto in A Minor, was, at the age of 17, the youngest person to win a gold medal at the 1992 J.S. Bach International Violin Competition in Leipzig, Germany. She has performed as soloist with many prestigious orchestras around the globe. In addition to her solo work, Pine established the Rachel Elizabeth Barton Foundation to assist young artists through various projects including the Instrument Loan Program, Grants for Education and Career, and Global HeartStrings, which supports classical musicians in developing countries.

Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 concludes the program. This optimistic piece of five movements was inspired by Schuman’s journey through the Rhineland.
